KUNG-FU

Shaolin Kung-Fu  is a Chinese name for the martial arts which dates back for more than 2,000 years. Written documentation on the exact history Kung-Fu has never been uncovered; however, myths and legends abound. It is best known among practitioners as an art developed as a means of both self-defense and health maintenance.  The most inclusive name for the martial arts taught by the monks at the Shaolin Temples is "Shaolin Chaun-Fa," which means simply "the fighting laws."  In Japan and around the world today most people know this art by it's Japanese translation "Kem-po" or Kempo/Kenpo which is simply a direct translation of Chaun-Fa.  Today in China the name has been officially changed to Kung-Fu Wu Su, as the official system of China.  Other common names today are Wing-Chun, San-Sou, various animal names, and even insects like the praying mantis, or family names.  All are very similar, but many today leave out the grappling and throwing skills in favor of more graceful and acrobatic techniques.

The definition of Kung-Fu  is multi-faceted. Technically, kung fu means a person possessing disciplined techniques and skills in martial arts with or without weapons. Broken down, Kung means discipline; Fu means person; hence, a disciplined person. Wu means martial; Su means technique or skill; hence, a martial skill. Its ultimate definition becomes even more profound, in that Kung Fu Wu Su is truly the harmonious blending of body, mind and spirit in order to become a better person and live a better life.

Students of Kung Fu become disciplined in the proper execution of
martial art techniques through repetition, practice, focus and concentration.

These disciplines become priceless assets throughout ones life. An individual can take them into his/her professional, academic and social activities. Thus these skills become a part of the self; a way of being.

It is for this reason that for some, Kung Fu begins as a curious interest in the martial arts which ultimately evolves into a way of life.
