Big Bear Lake March 27th and 28th
The weather was wonderful with the exception of it being a bit windy Saturday and very windy...on the lake...Sunday.
Oddly the wind did not seem in evidence elsewhere. It also came and went at intervals.
When it blew hardest was when the bite was best, and on the biggest fish. Really choppy and stirred up seemed to be the ticket.
I had the Lake nearly to myself in my kayak, with one or two boats seen in the distance still-fishing. One guy was trolling up and down the middle of the lake Sunday, but I don't know how he did. The shore fishermen were doing well everywhere I saw them.
I fished the North shore from my kayak trolling parallel to shore with Rapala Cd-5 and Cd-3 minnows in fire tiger and black/silver.
Both days I launched about 6am and landed around 9:30am.
Saturday I caught 11 trout and Sunday I caught 14. I fished all the way to the dam, then across and on the south shore Saturday.
On Sunday I focused on the North shore and headed East from my launch point and fished new areas.
Saturday I caught mostly smaller fish, one pound or so with two over two pounds. Sunday I found the larger fish catching three over 3 pounds, one over four pounds and the rest smaller. Only four were females, one spawned out and the other three still full of roe. All the fish except one of the three pounders were pink to dark red meat. Almost all fought like crazy. I have eaten a few boneless fillets floured, fried in butter and topped with capers and lemon pan sauce. The best!
I used my fish finder and GPS extensively, finding and marking bottom structure that the fish were keying on and trolling over the productive areas repeatedly. The best pattern was after the wind picked up fishing along the underwater slopes I found facing the wind around the points. That is where the largest fish came from as well. I fished in 6-12 feet of water along the slopes.
